NC Hillel expresses concern for students' academic freedom

North Carolina Hillel is very concerned that a Ph.D. student who has repeatedly made anti-Israel comments is teaching a course on “The Conflict over Israel/Palestine.” Kylie Broderick’s comments on social media repeatedly question Israel’s right to exist and make clear a bias and unwillingness to engage with people with other perspectives of this complicated and intractable conflict. We fear that students who support and have a connection with Israel will be unwelcome or unsafe in this class, impinging on their academic freedom.

We plan to meet with UNC Chapel Hill administrators in the coming days to ask that they ensure students with multiple perspectives are given the freedom to learn in a fair environment and form their own opinion.
