Jewish Learning with NC Hillel
“There is divine beauty in learning, just as there is human beauty in tolerance. To learn means to accept the postulate that life did not begin at my birth. Others have been here before me, and I walk in their footsteps. The books I have read were composed by generations of fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, teachers and disciples. I am the sum total of their experiences, their quests. And so are you.” —Elie Wiesel
We are committed to providing Jewish learning opportunities that are innovative, engaging, and meet student where they’re at.
Fall 2023 Learning Cohorts
Jewish Learning Fellowship
Our JLF seminar is not a class, but a Jewish learning community. You’ll be able to explore yourself, your heritage, and great ideas of Judaism, using both your mind and heart. We’ll gather together each week for a 1 hour session. We’ll also invite students to (virtual) coffee, to spend Shabbat together, and we’ll help you feel connected to next steps and alumni offerings after JLF ends. Fellows can earn $180-$250 in a stipend at the end of the program if they participate in all aspects of JLF. Applications for JLF Fall 2023 are open until August 22. Please reach out to Nikki Michaelson for more information about JLF at UNC and Sarah Gindes for more information about JLF at NC State.
Tar Heel Tzedakah
What does it mean to give Jewishly? UNC Hillel is launching the inaugural cohort of Tar Heel Tzedakah, an 8 week giving circle experience. Participants will discuss hot topics in philanthropy, develop their personal giving statement and ultimately donate $1,800 to the non-profits of their choice!
We ask each student to contribute $18 towards the Giving Circle (scholarships are available) which will be amplified with a generous donor's contribution for a total of $1,800. Applications for the Tar Heel Tzedakah Cohort Fall 2023 are open. Please reach out to Nikki Michaelson for more information.
