Embracing Jewish Inclusion at UNC Hillel
By Nikki Michaelson, UNC Hillel Campus Director
I have been incredibly excited about UNC Hillel's Inclusion initiative this year. When approached by a local community member eager to add inclusion programming for adults with disabilities at Hillel, I jumped at the opportunity. With a background in disability social work, it was a chance to connect two of my passions to develop an even stronger Jewish community here at Carolina.
These initiatives give the chance for our students to connect in a really beautiful way with a population of our community that many people may not think to include in young adult social programming. By celebrating Tu B'Shevat together with a seder and terrarium building, our students and their new friends were able to share in their Jewish experiences, highlighting the Jewish value of btzelem elohim, that we are all made in the divine image.
“Spending time and getting to know Michael at terrarium making was so much fun. At first, Michael was a bit reserved but very soon started feeling comfortable around me. I loved hearing about his passions, his favorite TV shows, and his weekend plans. I loved seeing the smile on his face when we finished the activity and were getting to know each other. I value times like these because they show me how just spending an hour or two with somebody can have a big impact on their day, their week, and even their lives.” - Gili H., UNC ‘27
I look forward to continuing this initiative for years to come. Our next partnership programs, mask making for Purim and a Passover celebration, will surely be as fun and beneficial for all involved.
Do you know someone who would be interested in joining our programs? I'd love to talk - please email me at nmichaelson@nchillel.org
